There was a time when many thought bait was always going to be the most realistic way to catch big wrasse. Well, not anymore. Using a light set up and soft lures provides great sport with these hard fighting brutes. Big wrasse love savage gears! They are known to take live sandeels so it makes perfect sense. The best time to use these lures for wrasse is anytime there is tide running. Use as light a jig head as possible and increase the weight as the tide run strengthens to keep the lure bouncing along the bottom, with as slow a retrieve as possible. Bumping the lure down tide whilst letting line out is also a very effective method. This has accounted for a 7lb3oz wrasse - amazing fight, beautiful colours and a very satisfying catch.
